GNU/Linux
Linux was first developed in 1991 by Linus Torvalds as a simple operating system core or kernel to replace a flawed and expensive system named Minix. As Linus added features to his creation, people took notice, and began to recommend and request additional features of their own. That's when Linus decided to post the source code for his mini operating system on the fledgling internet, and named it GNU/Linux.
From that point on GNU/Linux grew exponentially in both usage and functionality. Corporations started to take interest. Intel, Ibm, Sun, and even the US Government all began using and adding to the system. Today, with the support of companies, government, and over a million volunteers, GNU/Linux has become the system of choice for 60% of all internet websites including Ebay, Amazon, and Google. Additionally, 20% of the corporate back office email and file servers run GNU/Linux, and in 2003 GNU/Linux became the #2 most used desktop operating system, unseating Apple's popluar Macintosh OS.
In 15 years, GNU/Linux has moved from a dorm room to the server room of many Fortune 500 companies. This is a testament to the stability, flexibility, and reliability of GNU/Linux and the open source development model it was created under.
