About Us

Aptenix Desktop Solutions was formed in 2005 to help organizations explore the growing open source software market. Companies and governments around the world are implementing open source, and have realized the benefits.

From Google, Amazon.com, and IBM, to the governments of Germany, France, and China, open source adoption has been steadily growing over the past 7 years. This pace has accelerated due to

the major releases of desktop components such as browsers, office suites, and multimedia applications. GNU/Linux is now the #2 desktop operating system, unseating Apples Macintosh operating system in late 2003. It is in this area that Aptenix Desktop Solutions focuses its efforts, to allow it's clients to expand desktop offerings without license restrictions or vendor lock-in. Our services include cross platform open source solutions for existing Windows desktop systems, to complete desktop environment migration, support and training. With open source, you could save over 50% of your current IT budget with improved security, and system management without sacrificing features or usability.

Small business, Non-profits, local government agencies, and educational institutions are especially susceptible to the costs associated with building and maintaining complex computer networks. Security and virus protection alone can cost a small agency thousands of dollars a year in software licensing and staffing alone. The cost of ignoring security concerns is even greater. The Computer Security Institute conducted a survey of 538 computer security practitioners in corporations, government agencies, financial institutions, medical institutions, and universities and found that 85 percent of respondents had detected computer security breaches within a twelve-month period. Financial losses due to these breaches totaled $377,828,700.

Is open source software more secure?

The charts below are a comparison between the popular open source Suse 9.3 GNU/Linux desktop operating system, and Windows XP Professional. In the past four years each operating system has had a comparable amount of security vulnerabilities reported against it. However, the difference is clearly seen. Of the vulnerabilities reported, a large percentage of Windows XP's defects remain unpatched, where as 100% of Suse 9.3 vulnerabilities have been fixed.

The ability to patch reported vulnerabilities in a timely manner is simply one of the many reasons why open source software has maintained a superior security history to other operating systems. A world wide community of thousands of developers continuously review and revise open source software, discovering and repairing software defects faster than any company with limited resources could ever match.
